Beebe Healthcare

  • 424 Savannah Road, Lewes, DE 19958
  • (302) 645-3300

Located in beautiful historic Lewes, Delaware , near Rehoboth Beach, Beebe Healthcare offers an array of inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and diagnostic services. Founded in 1916 by two physician brothers, Drs. James Beebe and Richard C. Beebe, the medical center in Lewes is a 210-licensed-bed, not-for-profit seaside community hospital. Beebe's specialized service lines include cardiovascular, oncology, women's health, and orthopaedics.

Beebe also operates the Beebe Health Campus on Route 24 , Beebe Lab Express , Wound Care and Diabetes Management Services , Gull House Adult Activities Center , Home Health Agency , a Nursing School , and satellite imaging and lab services, including walk-in care centers throughout Sussex County.

Our Medical Staff has grown tremendously since the early 1990s. Family practice physicians, specialists, internists, and several surgeons are available so residents do not have to travel long distances for quality medical treatment. Beebe also operates the Millville Walk-In Care near Bethany Beach during the summer.

Beebe participates in many community events annually, including the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, the American Heart Association's annual Heart Walk and Heart Ball, and the American Diabetes Association's Walk for Diabetes. The Population Health Department provides cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, and other free and reduced-cost screenings at local CHEER Centers, Super G, fire halls, churches, and other community locations. Support programs include a Diabetes Support Group, Ostomy Support Group, Cancer Buddies, and Breastfeeding classes for expecting parents.

To supplement care provided by our Medical Staff, our Department of Integrative Health offers relaxation and life enhancement programs to help people cope with stress and improve overall health.

Becoming Beebe Healthcare

In 2013, Beebe Medical Center has changed its name to Beebe Healthcare, reflecting the expansive community health system that it has become.

“Beebe has been more than a stand-alone, acute-care hospital for many years,” says Jeffrey M. Fried, FACHE, President and CEO of Beebe Healthcare. “For decades, Beebe has provided outpatient services in many locations, besides the hospital in Lewes. Beebe Home Care Services has provided care to people throughout southern Delaware since 1985. And our network of physicians serves patients in multiple locations.

“Today, we have seven convenient locations throughout Sussex County where people can receive outpatient healthcare services, including our newest location in Georgetown.”

In focus groups that took place in 2012, participants made clear that the term “medical center” did not describe the scope of services and geographic locations that Beebe provides. To better communicate with consumers, the decision was made to update our name while remaining true to our heritage.

“Changing our name is a major milestone in Beebe's evolution,” says the Honorable William Swain Lee, Chairman of the Beebe Healthcare Board. “Beebe's growth into a healthcare system has occurred for years as we've taken proactive steps to expand and serve the community. In 1916, Beebe was a two-room hospital . It became a medical center as it grew and offered more medical services. Today, the name Beebe Healthcare signifies a community health system that provides sophisticated medical care across many sites.”

Visitors, a Special Part of the Healing Process

Thank you for understanding the importance of visitors to the healing process. We know that this can be a stressful time for you and your loved one. We hope that this brief explanation of "how things work" here at Beebe Healthcare will make your visit more comfortable.

Please pick up a Visitor Card, available at each entrance of the medical center, and stop at the Information Desk for the room number and the directions to the patient you are visiting.

Beebe Healthcare's Visitor's Guidelines:
Beebe asks that patients have no more than two visitors at a time. If there are already two visitors, please remain in the waiting area.
  • Young visitors (children under 12 years of age) are vulnerable to the infections that hospitalized patients sometimes have. Young visitors may also spread childhood diseases to our immune-compromised patients. Therefore, children under 12 are generally not allowed as visitors except under special privilege circumstances. When allowed, healthy children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult and stay in the room of the patient they are visiting.
  • Visitors may be asked to leave the patient's room whenever it is necessary for medical care to be rendered or whenever, in the judgment of the clinical staff, visiting must be limited due to the patient's condition.
  • Please do not bring in outside food or beverages, as many patients are on dietary restrictions.
  • Please do not bring in outside medications without notifying the nurse.
  • Visitors are kindly asked to comply with the evening announcement when visiting hours are over.
  • For the health of the patient keep visits short — 10 to 15 minutes .
  • Visitors should use public restrooms available throughout the building.
  • Some patient rooms are semi-private and there is limited space. Overnight stays in these rooms are discouraged due to privacy issues.
  • Please understand that some patients may not wish to have visitors, and they make that request of the staff caring for them.
  • Parents or responsible adults should consider the emotional health of children seeing a loved one who is ill and prepare them for what they may see.
  • When young visitors must accompany a visitor to the hospital, please leave them in the care of a responsible adult in the waiting areas. Have them share their messages of love and the news of their young lives with their loved one by phone, letters, cards, or drawings.

If you need to make special privilege visiting arrangements, please speak to the Charge Nurse, Nursing Supervisor, or call the Patient Relations Representative to discuss this possibility.
